ACI Opens Boarding Division for Girls

August 2009
The American Collegiate Institute (ACI) is happy to announce the revival of its boarding division with the opening in August of a new “dormitory” for girls on the top floor of the new Taner building. The new dorm is designed to accommodate 50 students and will enable more students throughout Turkey to take advantage of what ACI has to offer. Over the last few years ACI has been accepting roughly 10-15 students from all over Turkey. Living accommodations have had to be found individually and were not always near the school. In an effort to accommodate the increasing demand for an ACI education, the decision was made to reintroduce the boarding section, first for girls and at a later date for boys. The opportunity to increase enrollment by opening a boarding section means that a more diverse population of students will have the possibility to take advantage of ACI’s academic program. Special activities designed for the dormitory students with the help of faculty members will, together with ACI’s increasing number of clubs and social activities, provide a comprehensive program as reflected in the school’s motto “Enter to learn; Depart to serve”.

March 2009
An Izmir street has been named in honor of 1937 ACI graduate Ayşe Mayda. Ms. Mayda, daughter of one of Izmir’s leading families, was Izmir’s first female orthodontist and is a well-known benefactor of charities and educational and environmental projects. In the unveiling ceremony the Konak mayor called her an exemplary woman of the Turkish Republic. Ms. Mayda still takes her place in the marches and parades to celebrate the principles of the Republic. She was present at the breaking of ground for the first Taner building on the ACI campus, and last year was present again at the beginning of construction of the new Taner Hall. ACI is proud to have its graduate honored by the city in this thoughtful way. The street with Ayşe Mayda’s name runs beside her house in the Küçükyalı area of Izmir, not far from ACI.

March 2009
The SEV American Hospital in Gaziantep celebrated the completion of the new Şifahane Plaza, located at the hospital entrance. Şifahane is Turkish for ‘House of Healing’ and was the name by which the hospital was popularly known in Gaziantep in years past. The Greater Gaziantep Municipality was instrumental in the redesigning of the plaza through architectural alterations and road works. The Head of the SEV Board of Directors, Erhan Dumanlı, therefore honored Mayor Asım Güzelbey at the ceremony with the presentation of a commemorative shield. The electric utility company also contributed to the plaza project by eliminating unsightly towers and above-ground cables. For his part the mayor pledged to continue renovating the neighborhood around the hospital in view of its historical value, including the creation of a wider connecting road that provides easier access for patients, staff and ambulances.
